Funchal Old Town

Overview

Funchal´s Old Town or Zona Velha is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. The old quarter is known for its narrow and winding cobbled streets which are lined with old buildings, its numerous historical attractions and architectural splendor, and for being home to some of the island's best restaurants and cafés. Almost 500 years old, Funchal´s Old Town offers much to see and do and must be explored. Highlights of the city's oldest neighborhood include Forte de São Tiago, Mercado dos Lavradores or the Farmer's Market, the Cable Car Station to Monte, Madeira Story Centre and the Bordal Embroidery Factory, amongst others. When wandering through the area, visitors will also come across a number of doors that have been painted in stunning designs, throughout Rua Santa Marta and other roads close by, by Portuguese and international artists.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims visiting Funchal's Old Town will not be able to find any mosques or Islamic Centres. They will also not be able to find prayer facilities anywhere else in the city. Muslim tourists may however be able to locate a secluded place outdoors to offer their prayers. If unable to do so, they will have to return to their hotel rooms at prayer times.

Halal Food

As mentioned above, Funchal's Old Town is home to a number of fantastic cafés and restaurants. While these establishments will offer a plethora of great options, Muslim visitors will not be able to find Halal certified food here. They will therefore have to dine on suitable seafood and vegetarian dishes when in Funchal.
