Faro Old Town

Overview

Faro's Old Town or Cidade Vella is rich in history and is therefore the perfect way for visitors to get to know the city. Facing the harbor, the atmospheric Old Town is surrounded by medieval walls and is known for its cobblestone streets and alleyways, and Moorish remains. When exploring the Old Town, visitors will come across medieval arches, baroque, gothic and Moorish architecture, the beautiful, tree lined Largo de Sé, the Cathedral of Faro, the Museu Arqueológico, handicraft markets, art galleries, a plethora of great outdoors cafés and restaurants, and much more. Those looking to get a better view of the area could climb the steps of the tower of the Faro Cathedral which is located in the middle of the square for incredible views of the city of Faro.

Prayer Facilities

The city of Faro is home to a small Muslim population, so Muslim visitors will be able to find a mosque, namely the Mesquita de Faro which is located in Bom João. Muslims visiting Faro's Old Town can therefore ask to be directed to this mosque when needed, or they could try to find a secluded place outdoors to offer their prayers.

Halal Food

While finding Halal food in Faro will be quite difficult, it is not impossible. Muslim tourists will be able to find a couple of Halal restaurants located in the vicinity of the Mesquita de Faro. Two restaurants in Faro known to serve Halal food include Garrett Snack Bar and Horus Snack Bar. Muslims visiting the city will also be able to get more information regarding the availability of Halal food while at the local mosque.
