Overview

Founded in 1722, the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra or the Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra, located in the heart of Coimbra's downtown area is the largest botanical garden in Portugal. It is also one of Europe's most beautiful, housing a remarkable collection of over 1200 plants, trees and flowers; including rare and exotic species from all over the world. Some of the garden areas found here, include the tropical corner, the bamboo forest, the medicinal plants nursery and the lime grove. The Botanical Garden also houses a few lush greenhouses. Visitors will be able to relax by one of the many elegant fountains, or the large artificial lake, and explore the peaceful 13 hectare garden by following the numerous paths. The attraction is popular amongst locals and tourists, and is sure to be a fun day out for the entire family.

Prayer Facilities

The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra does not have prayer facilities for Muslim visitors. Muslims visiting the attraction may however be able to find a secluded area outdoors to offer their prayers. They could also make use of the facilities offered at the one known mosque in Coimbra; Mesquita de Coimbra.

Halal Food

While visitors to the Botanical Gardens will not be able to find a food outlet within the attraction, they will be able to find plenty of cafés and restaurants in the city of Comibra. Since there are no known Halal restaurants in the city, Muslim tourists will have to dine on suitable seafood and vegetarian dishes at local non-Halal restaurants.
