Overview
The Moorish Castle, also known as the Castle of the Moors, or Castelo dos Mouros is one of the only examples of military architecture in Sintra and is a popular tourist attraction. It is perched high above Sintra's Old Town, on one of the hilltops of the Serra de Sintra, in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The castle was built after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula and was affected physically numerous times. Today, the ruinous castle has been partially restored and offers much to see. From the pathways circling the castle, visitors are offered incredible views of the Sintra region. Visitors will also be able to see stunning views by climbing one of the castle's three squat towers. Inside the walls of the castle, the remains of houses occupied by the Muslims still exist, as well as areas occupied by silos.
Prayer Facilities
As with any other attraction in the town of Sintra, finding prayer facilities at the Castle of the Moors will not be possible. Muslim visitors may however be able to find a secluded area outdoors to offer their prayers. If they are unable to do so, they will have to return to their accommodation at prayer times, since there are no known mosques in the town of Sintra. There are however a few mosques in Lisbon, which is located about 45 minutes away from Sintra.
Halal Food
The Castle of the Moors does not house a food outlet. Visitors will however be able to locate variety of cafés and restaurants in the town of Sintra. While none of these will be Halal certified, Muslims can dine on the seafood and vegetarian options available. Since Lisbon is approximately 45 minutes away, Muslim tourists could also visit one of the several Halal restaurants in the city.
