Overview

Castelo dos Governadores or the Governor's Castle was originally built by the Arabs and then became the residence of the Governors of the Algarve. Although the castle was altered several times and was partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, it is still quite impressive and is a must-visit for its Moorish history. Castelo dos Governadores was classified a National Monuments and is known for its military style architecture, as well as for its beautiful Manueline style window, at which it is said King Sebastião said his last prayers before setting off for the battle of Alcácer-Quibir. Visitors to the castle will also be able to see the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Algarve above the two main entrances.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims visiting Castelo dos Governadores will not be able to find prayer facilities within the attraction. They also will not be able to locate any mosques or Islamic Centers in the town of Lagos. Muslim tourists will therefore either have to find a secluded area to offer their prayers, or they will have to return to their hotel rooms at prayer times.

Halal Food

While there are no known food outlets at Castelo dos Governadores, visitors will be able to find plenty of cafés and restaurants in the town of Lagos. Muslim visitors will however not be able to find any Halal restaurants in the town. They will therefore have to dine on suitable seafood and vegetarian dishes at a local non-Halal restaurant.
