Overview

Located in the heart of the city of Cork is the roofed English Market, known to be one of the oldest municipal markets in the world. While the market was popular locally, it gained worldwide fame when Elizabeth II visited it in 2011 and is thus today frequented by locals and tourists alike. The market offers a variety of Irish artisan produce, pastries, freshly caught seafood, fruits, vegetable, herbs, spices, farmhouse cheeses and a number of other Irish specialities and exotic items. Visitors will also find the Farmgate Cafe and Restaurant here. The restaurant is known to serve a plethora of local dishes made from ingredients bought at the market.

Prayer Facilities

While Muslims visiting the English Market will not be able to find prayer facilities, they will be able to locate a few mosques and Islamic Centers in Cork. Masjids in the city include; the Cork Mosque and the Cork Muslim Foundation Mosque. Muslim tourists can therefore ask to be guided to the closest one when needed.

Halal Food

As mentioned above, the English Market does house a restaurant; Farmgate Café and Restaurant. Visitors can either dine here, or they can fill up their stomachs with a variety of samples from the stalls at the market. If dining at Farmgate Café and Restaurant, it is best for Muslim visitors to make sure the vegetarian and seafood dishes they order are suitable, since non-Halal ingredients will be widely used. There are also a few Halal restaurants in the city of Cork.
