Overview

Brazil proudly stands for its largest urban forest, which covers 32 km². Gratitude should be raised to Emperor Dom Pedro the second. In the year 1861 he realized the deforestation around Rio and insisted that Tijuca should be replanted with its rich greenery. His idea was to secure water for the future people of Rio and he has succeeded in doing so.

The Tijuca Forest is home to more than 1600 plant species and 350 different species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. It has luxurious vegetation. The vista of the park cannot be understated with its various terrains and it consists of more than 30 waterfalls.

There are approximately three million visitors per year to witness the stunning rainforest. This enormous park is divided into 3 sections: the Carioca Hill, Pedra Bonita, and Gávea. This park offers many activities for its visitors. The forest division has many hiking trails and picnic areas. Carioca Hill is known as the home of Christ the Redeemer. Pedra Bonita is a place for adventure seekers with adventures such as rock climbing and hang gliding. Admission into the Tijuca National Park is free of charge. No public transportation available, but van and tram facilities are available on request for anyone who wants to travel far.

Many private companies offer other facilities like day tours and hiking through the park for visitors to get the best experience.

Prayer Facilities

There are two mosques located down Rio de Janeiro Sociedade Beneficente Muçulmana (Society for the Benefit of Muslims) is a mosque and community centre that serves the Muslim community located in Tijuca and Mesquita da Luz.

Halal Food

Halal restaurants in Tijuca National Park are very scarce. Muslims can inquire about Halal Food from the mosques. Brazil is known as a major exporter of Halal meat. Therefore Halal meat will be available. Muslims should also be aware that alcohol is served in their restaurants.
