Johannesburg also called Jo'burg is the largest city in South Africa and the third largest city in Africa. It is also the most populous city in the world not situated on the shores of a major body of water. The city has an electric atmosphere and is home to numerous attractions and large green areas, and has excellent weather conditions. There is much to see and do in Johannesburg; therefore tourists are sure to never get bored. There have however been reports of Johannesburg having crime and safety problems and tourist must be aware of this. Muslims make up a small percentage of the city’s population; however Muslims tourists will be able to easily find quite a number of Halal restaurants and prayer areas in Johannesburg.
A great place to start sightseeing would be at Mary Fitzgerald Square, which was previously known as Newtown's Market Square. This square was renamed to honor South Africa’s first female trade unionist- Mary Fitzgerald; who is said to have greatly contributed to Johannesburg’s history. All year round numerous events are held here. There are several cafes here and it is a great place to people watch and relax.
