When in the architecturally attractive city of Tavira, the Castle of Tavira or Castelo de Tavira is a must-visit. The 11th century fortress was built on the site of another castle, by the Moors during their occupation of the Algarve. Although now the castle is in ruins, it is a great reminder of the different cultures that have left their mark in the city. Today, visitors can wander the castle’s well-manicured garden and marvel at the stunning view of the city and the mouth of the Gilão River, from the remaining battlements and towers, as Tavira Castle is located at the highest point of the region.
