A Weekend Getaway - Mumbai

The economic heart of India, Mumbai is also one of the major metropolitan cities of India. Whether it is historic attractions, shopping or modern places to visit, you will find Mumbai an exciting place to visit. Here is a two-day itinerary for visiting the city.

Itinerary

Day 1

 After Fajr: Early Morning to Mid- Day Destinations

1. Gateway of India: A historic site and the symbol of Mumbai, it is a beautiful place to spend time and feed some pigeons. Best visited in mornings. Takes about 1-2 hours.

2. Colaba Causeway: Take a ride along this causeway and check out the fisher folk and surroundings. There are several stalls along the road where you can buy jewellery, footwear, souvenirs, etc. Takes about 2 hours. 

Mosques: BadriMahal, Gol Masjid, Jama Masjid.

Halal Restaurants: Khyber Restaurant, Zaffran Restaurant, Gulshan-e-Iran.

Afternoon: Afternoon to Evening Destinations

1. National Gallery of Modern Art: Features beautiful pieces of art. Takes about 1 hour.

2. Prince of Wales Museum: Has pieces of sculpture, art and historic artefacts. Takes about 2 hours.

3. Koli Fishing Village: Check out the colourful fishing boats and the locals that were the original inhabitants of the area.

Mosques: BadriMahal, Gol Masjid, Jama Masjid.

Halal Restaurants:Khyber Restaurant, Zaffran Restaurant, Gulshan-e-Iran.

Evening: Evening Destinations and Dining

1. Crawford Market: A local market housed inside a Victorian-style building. A walk through this colourful market can take about 1-2 hours.

2. Marine Drive and Chowpatty Beach: Ride along the Marine Drive. The Chowpatty is especially known for its street food.

Mosque: Jama Masjid Halal

Restaurants: Arabian Blues, Chinese Palace, Nandos.  

Day 2:

After Fajr: Early Morning to Mid- Day Destinations

1. Elephanta Island: Take a ferry ride from the Gateway of India to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The architecture and carvings on the pillars are impressive. Takes about 4 hours.

Mosques: BadriMahal, Gol Masjid, Jama Masjid.

Halal Restaurants: Khyber Restaurant, Zaffran Restaurant, Gulshan-e-Iran.

Afternoon: Afternoon to Evening Destinations.

1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus: Visit the terminus, a historic structure. Takes about half an hour.

2. Victoria Terminus: a beautiful building with grand peacock motifs. Keep half an hour for it.

3. Mumbai University: Another beautiful building with several carved figures. Keep an hour for it.

Mosques: BadriMahal, Gol Masjid, Jama Masjid.

Halal Restaurants: Khyber Restaurant, Zaffran Restaurant, Gulshan-e-Iran.

Evening: Evening Destinations and Dining

1. Juhu Beach: Stretches for 6Km and is excellent to enjoy a long walk. Spendabout 2 hours

2. Link Road: Has some lovely shops where you can find a number of things.

Mosques: Santacruz West Mosque, Chunabatti Mosque, Ezzy Masjid

Halal Restaurants: Kabab Lucknow Wale, Sultans Shawarma  

Miscellaneous

• If you are in the city a day earlier then visit Goregaon which is home to the filmcity of Bollywood. • Shopping: Shop for clothes, footwear, ceramics, etc. Some good malls include the Inorbit Mall, High Street Phoenix, Hypercity Mall, Grand Hyatt Plaza, Atria Shopping Mall, etc. • Restaurants: Almost all the halal restaurants in Mumbai are owned by Muslims. Some good places to dine include Khyber, Shalimar, Zaffran, Dilli Durbar, Kareem's, JafferBhai's Delhi Darbar, etc. • Transportation: Traffic can get congested in Mumbai, people either prefer taxis or travelling in local trains.
