Day One: Entering Ramadan with A Simple Intention

The first day of Ramadan always arrives with a unique gravity. We wake up for Suhoor in the stillness of the morning’s earliest hours, our hearts full of grand plans. We envision ourselves finishing the Quran, never missing a Sunnah prayer, and maintaining a state of perfect Zen. But by mid-afternoon, when the first "fasting headache" kicks in and our energy dips, that "perfect" Ramadan version of ourselves can start to feel like a stranger.

If you are feeling the pressure to perform today, take a breath. This month is not a trophy to be won; it is a garden to be tended.

Niyyah Over Performance

In the world of travel, we often focus on the destination—the "top ten sights" or the "perfect photo." Spiritual travel is different, because the Prophet ﷺ taught us that "actions are judged by intentions." This means that your Niyyah (intention) is the most important thing you will carry today.

If your goal for today was to read two Juz but you only managed two pages because you were tired or busy caring for others, your intention to connect with Allah’s words is what remains in the scales. Allah (swt) is not looking for a perfect checklist, but is looking for a heart that is turned toward Him.

Setting the Tone, Not the Pace

The first few days of Ramadan are for "rooting." Like a tree, if you grow too tall too fast without deep roots, you will topple when the middle-of-the-month fatigue hits. Use these first few days to reflect.

Instead of asking "What am I going to do this month?", try asking:

  • “Who do I want to be when the moon of Shawwal appears?”
  • “What is the one habit that is weighing down my soul that I can finally set aside?”
  • “How can I be more present in my prayers?”

These questions will take your focus away from the ambitious goal-setting and help you dive deeper into your hearts. Answering it would help us to be more connected with the meaning behind every one of our deeds, and ultimately, would help us feel closer to Allah.

The "One Change" Philosophy

Bettering ourselves doesn't require a total personality transplant. Real, lasting change usually happens in the smallest of shifts. This Ramadan, try choosing one thing. Perhaps, it is replacing one hour of scrolling with ten minutes of Dhikr. Or maybe it is choosing a gentle word when you feel irritable from hunger.

When we focus on "Better" rather than "Best," we leave room for Allah’s mercy to fill the gaps.

A Prayer for the First Sunset

As you sit before your first Iftar tonight, remember that the "empty space" in your stomach is meant to create space in your soul. Entering Ramadan with a calm intention is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

May this month be one of ease, deep roots, and a heart that finds its way back home. Ramadan Mubarak!
