There is a quiet hopefulness in the early mornings of Rajab. It is a month that arrives with a sense of possibility. It reminds us that renewal often begins gently, long before any change becomes visible.
Rajab has long been understood as a time of sowing. In this month, hearts settle and intentions rise. Coming near the time of Ramadan, it is the field before planting. Yet, it does not mean anything dramatic needs to happen, because the soil is simply prepared. In this time, we begin to notice what has grown in us over the past year and what we hope might grow next.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged this slow, sincere preparation. Rajab softens what has become hardened. It invites us to return to sincerity and to plant small seeds of effort. These seeds are not meant to bloom today. They are meant to take root so that when Ramadan comes, our hearts are ready to receive its light.
Rajab turns us inward, Sha‘ban helps us practice steadiness, and Ramadan becomes the harvest of everything that was planted with sincerity.
The duʿa of the Prophet ﷺ captures this movement beautifully.
“O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha‘ban and allow us to reach Ramadan.”
It is a prayer for barakah, for time, and for our seeds to take root. The Qur’an offers a similar image:
“And the good land. Its vegetation emerges by the permission of its Lord; but that which is bad - nothing emerges except sparsely, with difficulty” (7:58)
Surah Al-A’raf reminds us that growth is not only effort, but it is also permission and grace. We plant what we can, and Allah brings forth what He wills.
Preparing for Ramadan does not need to feel heavy. It can begin with one small intention; just one seed.
You might choose a simple habit. This can vary from a short daily duʿa, a quiet act of service, or a practice that reminds you to return to Allah in the middle of your normal days.
What matters is not the size of the seed. What matters is the sincerity behind every action. Growth in Islam often begins unseen, and the heart shifts before anything outward changes.
Rajab teaches us that beginnings do not need to be dramatic. They only need to be honest. We plant, we trust, and then we return again and again to intention.
Every seed starts in darkness before meeting the light, and Allah knows every seed a heart is planting.
