Surah Al-Baqarah: 285-286 Transliteration

aamanar-rosoolu bimaaa unzila ilaihi mir-rabbihee walmu`minoon, kullun aamana billaahi wa malaaa`ikathihee wa kutubhihee wa rusulihee, laa nufarriqu baina ahadim-mir-rusulih, wa qaaloo sami'naa wa ata'naa ghufraanaka rabbanaa wa ilaikal-maseer.

The messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from His Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say,) “We make no distinction between one another of his messengers” and they say, “We hear and we obey. (We seek) Your forgiveness, Our Lord, and to You is the return (of all)”.

[Al-Baqarah: 285]

laa yukalliful-laahu nafsan illaa wus'ahaa, lahaa maa kasabat wa 'alaihaa maktasabat, rabbanaa laa tu`aakhiznaaa in naseenaaa aw akhthaanaa, rabbanaa wa laa tahmil-'alainaaa ishran kamaa hamaltahoo 'alal-lazeena min qablinaa, rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bih, wa'fu 'annaa waghfir lanaa war-hamnaa, anta mawlaanaa fansurnaa 'alal qawmil kaafireen

Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our mawla (patron, supporter, and protector) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.

[Al-Baqarah: 286]

Benefits and Why You Should Recite the Ayat

The two ayat mostly benefits muslims as it functions as a guard during the night. However, it was also mentioned several times in some hadits about the importance and benefits of reciting it:

  1. It was revealed that Rasulullah SAW was bestowed on the two ayats as the ending of the surah as a storehouse (store of wealth) under the 'Arasy (HR Ahmad).
  2. Rasulullah SAW explained that in a house where the two ayats of Al Baqarah (verse 285-286) are not read for three nights, the devil's son/syaithan will approach him (HR Tirmidhi).
  3. Rasulullah SAW once said that reading the last 2 verses of Surah Al Baqarah (verse 285-286) is the same as reading the whole Surah Al Baqarah (HR Bukhari).
