With the ongoing World Cup 2026’s stadium cheers echoing around the world and football fever captivating millions of fans, sports are undeniably dominating our global conversations. Watching athletes display incredible endurance, strategy, and discipline reminds us of how movement can unite communities.
For a Muslim, this global celebration of athleticism is also an excellent opportunity to reflect on our own daily habits. In Islam, physical fitness is not merely a modern aesthetic trend or a seasonal hobby, as it is a lifestyle choice that connects our physical strength with our spiritual well-being.
Looking back at early Islamic history reveals that the early Muslim community was highly active and placed great value on physical readiness and skill. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) not only encouraged sports but actively participated in them, displaying lightness, strength, and joy. He frequently engaged in footraces with his wife Aisha (RA), creating a beautiful example of how sports can foster family bonding and lighthearted affection.
Furthermore, classical traditions highlight a specific set of sports that were highly encouraged within the prophetic household, namely archery, horseback riding, and swimming. These activities were not chosen at random; they required immense focus, core strength, and quick reflexes. Archery taught patience and precision, horseback riding built an intuitive connection with nature and balance, and swimming provided full-body endurance. Engaging in these sports was viewed as a practical way to develop a sharp mind and a resilient body capable of serving the community.
The spiritual foundation for maintaining a healthy body is woven directly into the text of the Quran. Physical health is viewed as a sacred trust, a gift from the Creator that we are responsible for protecting and nurturing. In Surah Al-Baqarah, when describing the qualities that made a leader fit to guide his people, the Quran explicitly highlights both knowledge and physical stature. This connection shows that a strong, capable physical build is a recognized blessing when paired with sound character and wisdom.
“Allah has chosen him over you and blessed him with knowledge and stature. Allah grants kingship to whoever He wills. And Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.” (Al-Baqarah 2:247)
This perspective shifts our entire relationship with exercise and sports. When a believer ties their running shoes, enters a swimming pool, or steps onto a football pitch with the intention of keeping their body healthy to better serve their family and perform their daily prayers, that exercise transforms into an act of rewardable worship.
As we enjoy the thrilling matches and incredible athletic feats on our screens, let us remember that our own bodies deserve that same dedication and care. Taking care of our health by moving regularly, learning new sports, and eating wholesomely is a beautiful way to show gratitude for the bodies we have been given. By aligning our fitness routines with the intentions of the Sunnah, we can ensure that every step, sprint, and swim brings us closer to both physical health and spiritual peace.
