The Athlone Castle is the main attraction of the town. The castle was priginally built in the beginning of the 13th century. Today the castle has a visitor center which has impressive displays and also features an audiovisual presentation. A few steps away from the castle, is the Luan Gallery which has an interesting collection of contemporary art. There are some beautiful pieces of ancient architecture that can be seen dotted around the town.
