Lombok is an island belonging to a group of islands of Southern Indonesia - known as the Lesser Sunda Islands or Nusa Tenggara. The island is a part of the province of West Nusa Tenggara and is located in the southern maritime region of Southeast Asia, just above Australia. A number of several other tiny islands surround Lombok - referred to as the Gili Islands by locals - which are also a popular attraction amongst tourists. r\n

The island of Lombok takes on a roughly circular shape and spans across an area of nearly 5,000 square kilometres. It is home to over three million Indonesian residents, with majority of the population comprising Muslims. The ethnic groups living in the island include Sasak, Balinese, Tionghoa-peranakan, Sumbawa people, Flores people and Arab Indonesians. r\n

Lombok has been divided into 4 separate regencies, namely - North Lombok Regency (Lombok Utara), West Lombok Regency (Lombok Barat), Central Lombok Regency (Lombok Tengah) and East Lombok Regency (Lombok Timur) of which their respective capitals are Tanjung, Gerung, Praya and Selong. In addition to the four regencies, Lombok also comprises the main city or kota of Mataram City - which is the largest city and provincial capital of the island.

Lombok International Airport is the main airport in Lombok and is located close to Praya city at Jalan Raya. It is the only fully-operational airport on the island and serves several airlines and thousands of passengers throughout the year. It offers several facilities to guests such as car and bus parking, public bus services, taxi services, as well as helicopter and fixed wing charter services.

Halal Restaurants

A number of Halal restaurants in Lombok are available to Muslim travellers, serving a range of local delicacies. The more prominent Halal restaurants in Lombok are located in the main city areas of the island and the capital city of Mataram in particular is home to a plethora of Halal Indonesian restaurants as well as fast-food outlets such as McDonald's and KFC. Most restaurants do not serve alcoholic drinks and popular local dishes include Ayam Taliwang, Kangkung Pelecing, Nasi Campur, Sate Ikan Tanjung, Sate Pusut and Urap Urup.

Mosques

A number of beautiful mosques in Lombok- which total up to more than 1,000 - are located across island. The oldest mosque on the island is the Bayan Beleq mosque - which has origins that date back to the 16th century. It is located about 80 kilometres away from the capital city of Mataram and is a popular attraction of the island.
