Description

Located in the Mpumalanga province of northeastern South Africa is the city which lies in the fertile valley of the Crocodile River – Nelspruit. Nelspruit is the capital of the Mpumalanga province and is known as the gateway to Mpumalanga and the Kruger National Park. It is also known for its sub-tropical climate and lush hills and valleys. The city is home to a plethora of attractions which will keep visitors occupied for days. Most of the activities and attractions found in Nelspruit, and the surrounding areas, are family oriented, making the city a great destination for a family getaway. Muslim visitors must be aware that they will be able to find Muslim-friendly facilities in Nelspruit.

Visitors to Nelspruit must pay a visit to the The Lowveld Botanical Garden, which is located just outside the city. The Crocodile River and the Nels River run through the garden, making it quite unique. Visitors will come across a rare collection of plant species as well as the first man made rain forest, while here. The garden also boasts a beautiful waterfall and a gentle pool, which forms when the two rivers merge. The garden has a unique topical atmosphere and is known to attract a large number of Nelspruit’s visitors.

Also located nearby; about a 30 minute drive away, is the Dinosaur Park. Set in a lush sub-tropical forest garden, this park has life size models of prehistoric animals on display. The models of the ancient reptiles, dinosaurs and the other displays are quite realistic and are scientifically accurate representations. Visitors here will also get to see monkeys running around and sub-tropical birds. This fascinating park will definitely prove to be an educational experience for all.

Next to the park is located the Sudwala Caves. These caves are believed to be about 240 million years old and therefore the oldest caves on earth. It is also said to encase the world’s oldest dolomite chamber. Those feeling adventurous can take a guided tour which involves getting down and dirty to reach a chamber filled with aragonite crystals. This is an epic underground adventure that the entire family will love. Unfortunately the tour is not suitable for everyone.

Also worth a visit is the nearby gold mining town of Kaapsehoop, The Nelspruit Nature Reserve, Hall Estate, the crocodile farm and the ostrich farm.
