Located in the east of The Netherlands on the banks of the River Rhine is the capital of the province of Gelderland; Arnhem. This large city, situated on the eastern border with Germany, has a rich and eventful past and this can be seen in the numerous buildings found all over the city. It is steeped in the history of the Second World War and is packed to the brim with museums and galleries. Arnhem is also conveniently located near one of the most popular national parks in The Netherlands; the Hoge Veluwe National Park, thus making it a great base for exploring. The bustling city is also home to numerous other attractions which will keep the entire family occupied for days. Arnhem offers a lot to see and do and is therefore a must-visit when in The Netherlands. Muslim tourists must be aware that they will be able to locate Muslim-friendly facilities in Arnhem. While mosques and Halal restaurants in Arnhem are quite limited, they are available.

As mentioned above, Arnhem boasts a wide variety of museums that will interest the whole family. One such museum is the Netherlands Water Museum or the Dutch Water Museum. This modern, interactive museum offers visitors the unique opportunity to learn more about water and water management. While here, visitors will get the chance to take a boat trip along a sewage canal and learn more about drinking-water and the use of water in The Netherlands. They can also watch a film on water and get educated on dike management. There is also a waterfall with a water play area for kids. Located in a historic building, the Netherlands Water Museum is an educational experience that must not be missed.

The Nederlands Openluchtmuseum or the Netherlands Open Air Museum is a unique experience for tourists to relive the Dutch past. It is also a fun and interactive museum that is home to historic houses, factories, farms and windmills; aimed to show visitors how ordinary Dutch people have lived over the past few centuries. Also, for modern art enthusiast, the Museum for Modern Art is a must-visit.

Burgers’ Zoo is another great attraction for those with children. It is one of Arnhem’s major attractions and is definitely worth a visit. It is a new type of zoological garden which is divided into seven parts consisting of ecosystems found all over the world. This 45-hectare park allows visitors to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitats. The park focuses mainly on education, recreation and scientific research. For animal lovers this zoo; said to be one of the biggest zoos in the country, will prove to be the highlight of their trip.

A trip to Arnhem is not complete without a visit to the bustling entertainment centre of the city; Korenmarkt, a square in the center of Arnhem, and Historische Kelders or the Historical Cellars, which are 40 medieval cellars which show what underground Arnhem used to look like. These restored cellars are found underneath one of Arnhem’s shopping streets and are now the location of cultural and other events. There are also guided tours available for those interested.

The closest airport to Arnhem is Eindhoven Airport; the second largest airport in The Netherlands, which has international and domestic flights and is about 89 kilometres from Arnhem. Tourists could also use the services offered at the largest airport in the Netherlands; Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which is located approximately 110 kilometres away.

Halal Restaurants

There are a couple of Halal restaurants in Arnhem. Ali Baba and De Pyramide are two restaurants which are said to serve Halal food in Arnhem. Muslim tourists must however make sure the food served at any of these restaurants is Halal before dining. They must also be aware that some of these restaurants do serve alcohol.

Mosques

There are a few prominent mosques in Arnhem. Ayasofya Mosque and Moskee El Fath are some of the masjids in Arnhem that are frequented by locals and tourists alike. Muslim tourists can also make inquiries regarding other prayer facilities in Arnhem while at the above mentioned mosques.
