10 Must-Try Fruits When Travelling in Asia

Visiting any destination involves tasting its indigenous food and fruits. Every country has something special to offer. Even though modern facilities have made it possible to transport exotic fruits across the globe, it still is more exciting to taste the fresh flavour of such succulent fruits when travelling. Read on for a compilation of a few must-try fruits when travelling across the Asian continent.

 

1. Rambutan

Native to the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia; Rambutan can be vaguely linked to the Lychee. It is a very popular garden fruit with leathery outer skin with spines and is sweet and juicy to taste.  

 

2. Durian

Durian

A fruit native to Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei; Durian is often called the "King of Fruits". Even though the smell is may be disagreeable for some, the taste of the fruit is just awesome and worth a try. Just make sure that you do not got to a meeting within a few hours of eating it. Most Hotels will also not allow the fruit to be taken to a Hotel room.

 

3. Salak/Zalacca

Salak

Also called as the snake-fruit, the Salak is native to Malaysia and Indonesia. Salak has a sweet and acidic taste. The skin of the fruit is brown and scaly and can be easily peeled to eat the garlic-shaped lobes.  

 

4. Manggis

Manggis  

Considered as one of the most delicious fruits, Manggis is a sweet and juicy fruit with a leathery purple skin.  

 

5. Cempedak

Cempedak

It is a tropical Malaysian fruit similar to a jackfruit but smaller in size. The fruit is sweet and chewy in taste when raw and has a very strong aroma.   

 

6. Sapodilla/Chikoo

Sapodilla

Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, the fruit was introduced to Philippines during the Spanish civilization and is also grown largely in India and Pakistan. The fruit is sweet in taste.  

 

7. Mandarin orange

A type of orange, it is grown in tropical and subtropical areas especially in China, Spain, Pakistan, Brazil and Morocco. The fruit is sweet and citrus in taste.  

 

8. Pawpaw

Originally cultivated in Mexico, Pawpaw or papaya is now grown across the world.  

 

9. Mangoes

Mangoes  

Grown abundantly in South Asia, there are different varieties of mangoes that can be relished in different countries in the region.  

 

10. Lanzones/Langsat

Lanzones

Original to Southeast Asia, Lanzones are popular in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. The fruit is oval in shape with a khaki colored skin. The fruit is translucent from inside and juicy.
