Like all other halal food items, consuming cheese should also comply with Islamic dietary regulations. These regulations refer to what Muslims can consume (halal) and what they may not (haram). While it is mostly safe to consume cheese, there might be differences regarding the halalness of cheese as it might be produced using different components and procedures in order to meet the different halal standards. Therefore, it would be good if Muslims could differentiate regarding the halalness of the cheese.

The majority of cheeses are automatically halal, as they do not contain animal ingredients or animal by-products. If they do include animal-based ingredients, they should therefore come from an animal that is halal (such as cows and sheep) and is slaughtered in Islamic slaughter practices (Zabihah).

In terms of consuming these cheeses, there's a wide variety to choose from. They are generally halal as they do not contain animal by-products and are usually sourced from a halal animal. With alternative and more modern production methods, they are generally safe to consume. While most cheese is halal, we strongly advise you to check the ingredients and the production process to ensure it meets halal standards before consumption. Some of the most popular types include:

1. Mozzarella Cheese

Mozzarella cheese is one of the most beloved choices for cooking worldwide. Making halal mozzarella cheese is widely available, allowing everyone to enjoy this cheesy goodness. Its mild and slightly tangy flavor, combined with its exceptional melting qualities, makes it an ideal ingredient for cheesy fillings or toppings.

2. Cheddar Cheese

Probably one of the most popular cheeses on the planet, cheddar cheese is also widely produced and hence easy to find as a halal option (even with a halal certification). Known for its sharp and robust flavor, this versatile cheese can be used to elevate any dish.

3. Cream Cheese

Some might argue that this counts as cheese, but in fact, it does! Cream cheese is relatively safe to consume as it is generally created from a mixture of cheese and heavy cream. This creamy and spreadable delight works wonderfully in both sweet and savory dishes.

4. Feta Cheese

Feta cheese, with its crumbly texture and tangy taste, is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine. This cheese is usually halal as it is sourced from sheep's milk. Halal versions of the feta are also popular in some countries.

5. Parmesan Cheese

Famous for its intense umami flavor, Parmesan cheese is also a popular item to pick, with halal options widely available. Often grated as a topping, these halal versions of parmesan cheese can elevate your cooking without any concerns while being easy to use.

Other gourmet cheeses that usually have halal versions or are produced in a naturally halal way include ricotta, Swiss cheese, cottage cheese, havarti, and gouda. Vegan versions of cheeses might also be a good choice if halal cheeses are not available. These gourmet and niche-use cheeses might be perfect for those of you who are willing to experiment and try to elevate your dishes.

Identifying Non-Halal Cheesesvarieties of cheese

While naturally halal in its production and ingredients, there are also types of cheese that are produced in a non-halal way. The use of rennet is crucial in the creation of cheese, and this step is usually where it changes the status of the cheese to haram. The popular use of pig’s rennet is one of the most common things in cheese production, and the use of fat from haram animals should always be one of the main considerations in choosing your cheeses.

Gelatines and other thickening agents on packaged cheese should also be identified before consumption, as they are also sourced from animal by-products where they are usually unable to be identified in terms of their halalness unless specified. Animal enzymes and whey powder should also be avoided as much as possible, as they are not suitable for halal use.

Some of the cheeses you should try to avoid unless specified as halal are halloumi, brie, blue cheese, Roquefort, gorgonzola, manchego, and paneer, as the traditional production methods include these prohibited animal-derived ingredients, or are hard to find in terms of their halal version.

Conclusion

By debunking the myths regarding the halalness of cheese, we could hopefully understand more about what is good to consume and what to avoid. With the appearance of Halal cheese and being able to differentiate it, Muslims are now free to indulge in their favorite cheesy dishes while being able to comply with their Islamic dietary restrictions. Whether it's the creamy goodness of mozzarella or the sharp tang of cheddar, there's always a way to find these halal cheeses.
