Notable Mosques to Visit on your Next Trip to Bintan
Muslim travelers visiting Bintan need not worry about finding mosques or prayer facilities when visiting the island. Bintan’s population is predominantly Muslim and not only are the mosques easy to locate with the help of locals but are also worth a day trip down to have an insider’s look into the local Muslim community and the island’s rich history.

Masjid Al-Muhajirin

Masjid Al Muhajirin is the biggest mosque in Bintan resorts and it can hold about 1,500 people at any single time! Following a short walk down the trail, you will find the mosque nestled amongst beautiful surrounding of lush trees and plants. The mosque is a place where travelers can find solace and enjoy the serenity and tranquility of the quiet surroundings amidst the local community.

What is unique about the mosque is its Javanese-style and classic open architecture with outdoor study areas for students learning the Quran and religious studies. Depending on the time you are there, you may even get to see the children huddled around for lessons.

Masjid Al-Muhajirin is easily accessible via taxi or car. Keep an eye out for the huge boulder that spots the mosque’s name engraved in Arabic!

Masjid Raya Sultan Riau

The Grand Mosque, or Masjid Raya Sultan Riau is the jewel of the island as it is one of the oldest and most historical mosques on Penyengat Island. Masjid Raya Sultan Riau is located on Penyengat Island which is a short 10-minute boat ride away from Tanjung Pinang. The mosque’s yellow and green façade is a beautiful blend of Javanese and Dutch architecture. Interestingly, a large part of the mosque was made of eggs which were gifts from the Sultan’s loyal subjects on the occasion of his wedding.

Since its construction in 1832, the building’s original shape and form has not been altered. What is special about the mosque is a handwritten Al-Quran manuscript that greets visitors at the main entrance of the prayer hall. Preserved and displayed carefully in a glass case, the manuscripts were written by the prince of Penyengat Island in 1867.
