What is it?
 

 

The Punakha Dzong is the administrative center of the Punakha Dzongkhag. Located in the city of Punakha, the Punakha Dzong was built in 1637; it was the second Dzong to be built in Bhutan and is also the second largest Dzong in the country. The Dzong also holds the history of being the venue for the crowning of the first king of Bhutan in 1907.

 

Where is it?
 

 

The Punakha Dzong proudly stands on an island at the convergence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The Dzong is connected to the main land with the help of a wooden bridge. This ancient fortress houses several valuable relics from the times when kings ruled the area.

 

What's There to See?
 

 
 

The assembly hall or the Kuenrey is a must-see. Located at the far end of the Dzong, the ceiling of the hall is adorned with several beautiful dragons. When you visit the Dzong in the afternoon, the light brings out the colors and the richness of the paintings in the most impressive way.

 

How to Visit?
 

 

To enter the Punakha Dzong you need a proper permit and the guide with whom you are visiting the Dzong should be licensed to give you a tour. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the Dzong, however you can take pictures of the Dzong.

 

Facilities for Muslims
 

 

Facilities for Muslims at Punakha Dzong are hard to come by. There is no reported masjid or Halal restaurant close to the Punakha Dzong. Plenty of open area is available in the vicinity however for prayers and travelers could always opt for vegetarian food.
