Tips for Traveling During a Heat Wave

Summer is usually the most popular time to travel in many destinations, especially since most kids enjoy quite a long summer vacation. It is however the least comfortable time of the year to travel, as scorching humid weather can affect every part of the travel experience. Getting about, sightseeing or even getting a good night’s sleep can be difficult with the high temperatures and humid weather, currently being experienced in most destinations. Families planning to travel during the summer should take into consideration a number of important points when deciding on a holiday destination. Since heat waves can be very dangerous for the very old and the very young, those traveling with kids should take extra care when choosing their vacation destination. Listed below are a few important points to consider when planning a summer trip and a few helpful tips to beat the heat.

  • Check the weather at the destination- with reliable weather forecast available these days, its best to check what the weather will be like at the destination.
  • Pack carefully- opt for lightweight, loose fitting, light colored clothing rather than heavier, darker garments. Hats, sunscreen and scarves are important items to pack.
  • Choosing accommodation- it is important to choose accommodation with air conditioning. Since not all hotels and resorts provide air conditioning, it is best to make sure the hotel you choose, specifically the room you choose has air conditioning
  • Start early- once at the destination, the best way to beat the heat while sightseeing is to start early, before the popular attractions get crowded
  • Outdoor attractions- avoid visiting these attractions during the hottest part of the day (usually between 2pm-5pm). Plan to visit these attractions during the cooler part of the day, either early in the day or in the evening when it’s considerably cooler.
  • Indoor attractions with air conditioning- visit these attractions during the hottest part of the day and get away from the scorching heat.
  • Extended hours- check if attractions have extended hours. Since many attractions these days have longer opening hours and even special night packages and tours, tourists can take advantage of these special hours and visit these attractions during the extended hours when it’s much cooler.
  • Plan activities in the same area- when planning the day’s itinerary; choose to visit attractions in the same area rather than randomly picking places which are far apart, where you will have to travel a distance between each attraction. This would reduce the number of hours spent on the road and keep you away from spending hours in a hot car.
  • Eat lighter meals-overeating and eating the wrong kind of food can heat up the body further. Sticking to smaller portions and the right kind of food will help to keep the body cooler.
  • Stay hydrated- the most important of all. Staying hydrated and strong is key to avoiding dehydration during the hot summer months. Drinking water regularly and avoiding drinks that are high in caffeine, such as coffee and colas which tends to increase the metabolic heat in the body and adds to dehydration are important facts to remember.
