The history of the Panyu region dates back to the Qin Dynasty during the year 214 BC. It is considered as one of the oldest cities in China. Archaeological evidence shows that Panyu was a bustling commercial center in the past. There are several interesting places to visit in Panyu; the best attraction is probably the Lianhua Shan or the Lotus Mountain. The Lianhua Shan has an attractive quarry from where red sandstone was mined in the historic times. The area also has a barrack and a pagoda dating from the 17th century.
The Dafushan Forest Park is located about 2 miles towards the west of Panyu. It is a beautiful park in the middle of which is a large lake. There are several steps throughout the park that help in traversing the park. The Nan Sha golf course is also one of the most beautiful places to play golf. The Chime-Long Paradise amusement park is the biggest amusement park in the country. It is placed near the Hanxi Changlong Metro Station in Panyu.
The downtown Panyu area offers a wide range of shopping facilities. There are several boutiques, cafes, tea shops and several other shops where one can buy almost anything. The downtown Panyu area also offers good accommodation facilities.
The nearest major airport to Panyu is the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The airport is located about 28 Km from central Guangzhou and offers good connectivity to Panyu. Visitors can take buses or taxis to reach Panyu.
There are a few halal food outlets and restaurants around the Panyu District. There is a halal food canteen in the Panyu Polytechnic, the East Canteen located at Level 2. There is a Muslim food stall located in the Shawan Nan Village.
Panyu forms a district of Guangzhou and visitors can find a number of mosques in the city. The Huaisheng Mosque in Guangzhou is the main mosque near Panyu.
