The port town of Alicante stretches across an area of over 200 square kilometres and is the second-largest Valencian city. It is home to a population of nearly 500,000 residents of which a significant percentage comprise immigrants from foreign countries such as Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Morocco. It is a popular tourist destination and offers a number of attractions and places-of-interest that are worth-visiting. 

The town itself features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with mild winters, warm summers and very little rain. The rainy season is usually between the months of September to October, with June to August being the hottest months. Various festivals and events are celebrated during the season of summer. Bonfires of Saint John is an important festival that is celebrated in Alicante by lighting bonfires, followed by several nights of fireworks and pyrotechnic contests. A special programme of theatre and dance is also staged in the Paseo del Puerto during summer. 

Alicante is home to a number of buildings and places-of-interest that are key tourist attractions in the area. Noteworthy sites include the Castle of Santa Bárbara, the port of Alicante, the Santa Bárbara castle, the promenade Explanada de España, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, L'Ereta Park and El Palmeral Park. Numerous museums are also available, scattered across the city, offering fascinating artefacts and items-of-interest that showcase the city's rich 100,000 year-old history.

Nearby Airports

Alicante Airport is the main airport serving the area of Alicante, as well as the rest of the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia. It is commonly referred to as the L'Altet Airport and is located around 10 kilometres to the south of the main city centre. It is the sixth busiest airport in the country, serving numerous airlines and millions of passengers every year.
