Description

Located in the southern region of Brazil, is the capital city and second largest city of Santa Catarina state; Florianópolis. Florianópolis has two parts that are linked by two picturesque bridges. One of these parts is the industrial zone, on the mainland and the other is an island, namely the Island of Santa Catarina. The city is one of the most popular destinations in Brazil and is known for its picturesque, sandy beaches, fascinating culture, breathtaking scenery, friendly people and much more.  Its main attraction is of course the many beaches that are frequented by locals and tourists mainly from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, and are ideal for surfing and other water sports. Although there is a small Muslim population in the city, Muslim visitors will not find it easy to locate Halal-friendly facilities such as mosques and Halal restaurants in Florianópolis.

Because of its wonderful beaches, many of the activities that tourists can enjoy are water related. For those looking for something even more family-friendly, the Florianopolis Agua Show Park is a must-visit. Located on the northern island, approximately 30 kilometres from Florianópolis’s city center, the Florianopolis Agua Show Park is home to a number of water and sporting activities and more. There are several water slides, chutes and pools all surrounded by greenery and native forests and attractive architecture that kids will love.  The park is very child-friendly and is therefore the ideal place to spend a fun day out with the family.

Another popular place to visit in Florianópolis is Barra da Lagoa; which is a small fishing village that houses a number of attractions. This naturally set, quaint village is located at the mouth of a tidewater channel and is accessible by a pedestrian-only bridge placed across the tidewater channel. The beach here is quite popular, and the village is renowned among the surfing community. It is known as one of the safest places to learn to surf in Brazil and visitors, if lucky may be able to see penguins swimming, in the cold water. Those visiting the island must try some fresh seafood as well as the freshly baked pastries, from one of the several bakeries. Barra de Lagoa also hosts the Festa da Tainha, in July, in which the featured dish is the tainha or the grey mullet.

Depending on the season, visitors will be able to enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities that include; hang gliding, scuba diving and snorkeling, kitesurfing, paragliding, rock climbing, trekking, white water rafting, sailing and river rafting. On waveless days, visitors can take advantage of the huge sand dunes formed on certain beaches all over Florianópolis, such as; Praia da Joaquina, and try their luck at sandboarding. This popular activity enjoyed all over the world, originated in Brazil and is a must-do. For nature lovers looking for great hiking areas, Lagoinha do Leste is a must-visit. And those visiting during the winter can also take a guided whale watching tour to catch a glimpse of the enormous and endangered Southern Right whales.

Muslim visitors can also dine on vegetarian or seafood dishes from local non-Halal restaurants after ensuring that the dishes do not consist of any non-Halal items. Because Florianópolis has a small Muslim population, Muslim tourists may be able to obtain more information on the availability of Halal food in the area, at the local mosque. Muslim visitors must also be aware that most restaurants in Florianópolis also serve alcohol.
