Longyearbyen is the capital of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway and is also the largest town in the area. Longyearbyen finds location in the Norwegian Arctic and is the most conveniently accessed border of Arctic. Longyearbyen serves as an excellent base for travellers looking to explore the region of Svalbard. Longyearbyendoes not have any public transport system and walking is the best option of getting around the town. The area offers a number of interesting activities like dog-sledging, hiking, snowmobile safaris and kayaking that visitors can enjoy during their stay in the area.

Longyearbyen is a picturesque town and the largest populated area in the Svalbard region of Norway. Visitors can walk around the town and enjoy exotic sceneries and a wide range of activities. Located at the edge of the Arctic, Longyearbyen offers visitors with a number of things to see and do. The Esmarkbreen Glacier is just 2-3 hours away from Longyearbyen and can be reached by boat. In the town Reindeers can be seen roaming freely and visitors can also spot arctic birds and polar foxes in the surrounding areas.

The Spitsbergen Airship Museum in the town has a good collection of aircrafts and items that have been used for exploring the polar region. The Svalbard Museum features a collection of human history in the region. There is a 24-hour sundial in the town that operates 24 hours every day during the summer season. There is also an art gallery in the town, the Svalbard Galley. There is also an artists’ workshop adjoining the gallery and it can be visited easily.

Longyearbyen also offers an interesting shopping scene. Most of the shopping can be enjoyed in the Lompensenteret shopping mall. The only drawback is that the shopping mall and supermarket is open for limited hours.
