Locarno is a beautiful town located in the Ticino Canton of Switzerland. Placed at the foot of the Alps and at the shores of Lake Maggiore, Locarno receives almost 2300 hours of sunshine every year. The city has attracted travellers from all around the world especially the northerners who are looking for a break from the cold weather. Locarno has been an important place since historic times and was the site of the peace conference in 1925, which was intended to bring steadiness to Europe after WWI. There are a few Muslim-friendly facilities in Locarno especially those offereing Halal food.

The blossoming palm and lemon trees make Locarno a wonderful place to visit. Locarno is also the site of the church of Madonna del Sasso, which is located overlooking the town. The Old Town or Città Vecchia is also an absolute must-visit when here. Visitors must walk around the Old Town to appreciate the stunning historic architecture. At the end of the Old Town is the Castello Visconteo, which is a 12th century castle worthy of a visit. The winding alleyways of the Old Town are lined with cafes and shops where travellers can relax and take in their surroundings, or do a bit of shopping.

The Piazza Grande is the center of the town and hosts a number of events and festivals. The Astrovia Locarno is a huge model of the solar system spanning over an area of 6km. Those looking for some hiking and skiing action can take a cable car ride up the Cardada-Cimetta, the closest mountain to Locarno. The promenade around Lake Maggiore is good to walk around and enjoy the cool and refreshing breeze.

Locarno also offers some great shopping. The Piazza Grande and the Old Town are the best places to buy goods to take back home. Both these areas have a number of shops and boutiques. Handmade jewelry, sports item and souvenirs are some things that can be bought in Locarno.

The nearest airport to Locarno is the Lugano Airport. From the airport visitors can take a bus to the Lugano station and from there a train to Locarno.
