Groningen; a lively university city in The Netherlands is a vibrant and youthful destination in the north of the country bordering Germany. It has everything one expects from a progressive metropolis. Home to several interesting museums, galleries, beautiful ancient and modern buildings and not to forget the picturesque canals as well as the numerous mills, the city has something of interest for everyone. It is a charming city to enjoy a wonderful and relaxing holiday with family or friends. Muslim travelers need not worry as there are some Muslim-friendly facilities in Groningen. There are a few prominent Halal restaurants and mosques in Groningen which serve the local Muslim community and tourists alike.

The city of Groningen has a rich history and it is clearly visible from the many medieval buildings still standing in the down town area. The Martini Tower is one of the most popular landmarks of the city and is visited by many. Those visiting the tower should climb to the top to enjoy grand views of the city. Close by is a square, surrounded by beautiful old houses. At the far end is the 16th century mansion known as the Prinsenhof and its beautiful garden known as the Princenhoftuin.

Other buildings of interest include the Town Hall situated in Grote Markt. It dates back to the year 1810 and it is an eye catching building. Groningen is also home to several museums and galleries. Groningen Museum is definitely worth a visit.  The museum is unique and its architecture is modern. A museum with modern as well post modern art; it is a delightful place to enjoy some interesting pieces. Another museum worthy of visit is the Maritime Museum. This museum offers a fascinating trip back in time, visitors can learn about the history of shipbuilding and the life on board a ship.

The Netherland is famously known for its windmills and those visiting Groningen will find over 80 of this unique heritage still left in the lovely city. Some of them are still open to the public.

Nearby Airports

The closest airport serving the city of Groningen is the Groningen Airport Eelde, located approximately 14 kilometres from the city center. Visitors can take the bus or taxi to get to their destination in the city. Other major airports that travelers can use are the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport or the Bremen Airport in Germany. From Amsterdam, visitors can travel by train to the city of Groningen while those traveling from the Bremen Airport can either travel by bus or train to their destination.

Muslim tourists will be able to locate a few restaurants serving a variety of halal cuisines such as Indian, Vietnamese, Turkish, American, Dutch and more.
