Located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, about half way between Christchurch and Picton, is the picturesque town of Kaikoura. Situated between two mountain ranges that extend into the sea, Kaikoura offers a wide range of breathtaking natural land and sea wonders. It is a magnificent destination and is considered majestic due to its grand mountains and rugged coastline. Kaikoura is said to be a place like no other and is a must-visit when in New Zealand. The town, apart from being known for its magical setting, is also a world renowned attraction for its wildlife. Those visiting will be met with a plethora of exciting outdoor adventure activities as well as fascinating history and magnificent wildlife. For Muslims visiting the town, there are no known Halal restaurants or Mosques in Kaikoura.

The first must-do for every visitor, is to climb in a boat and discover Kaikoura’s fabulously diverse marine life. There are a number of whale watching operators that offer guided tours for visitors to observe Kaikoura’s most famous resident, the sperm whale, as well as fur seals, dusky dolphins, killer whales and other popular marine creatures including migrating Blue, Southern Right, Humpback and Pilot whales. The area also has an amazing variety of birdlife which nest in the surrounding mountains, this includes; petrel, albatrosses and shearwaters. Kaikoura also offers opportunities for tourists to swim with the seals, meet the local dolphins and take bird watching tours.

This picturesque coastal town is home to another popular attraction, the Maori Leap Cave. This sea-formed limestone cave was discovered in 1958 and there are guided tours for those interested, with ticket purchases having to be made at the Caves Restaurant. There are six tours that operate daily and those visiting will learn more about the history and heritage of the dimly lit cave, and come across stalactites and stalagmites and other limestone formations and cave coral. It is a great way to get to learn more about Kaikoura and its past.

Being a top destination for international visitors, Kaikoura boasts a wide selection of outdoor activities including; fishing, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, four wheel motor biking, and horse trekking among several others. Visitors should also take in the popular local historical and scenic sights found along the shore and amongst the native bush. Those looking for a bit more adventure and to get panoramic views of the region can hire and fly a small aircraft all on their own, no experience needed. The town is extremely family friendly and is the ideal vacation spot for those looking for a bit of relaxation, as well as for those looking for adrenaline pumping activities.

Nearby Airports

Located about two and a half hours away by car, from Kaikoura is the closest airport; Christchurch International Airport. Tourists can take the train, taxi service or possibly rent a car to get to their destination. 

Halal Restaurants

There are no known Halal restaurants in Kaikoura, however Muslim visitors can try out the local speciality of crayfish after ensuring that the dishes do not have any non-Halal items in them. There is also the option of dining on fish and chips, for those looking for food that is more familiar. 

Mosques

There are no known mosques, Islamic Centres or prayer facilities in Kaikoura. Muslim travelers are therefore advised to pray in their hotel rooms, if possible before they set out on their daily excursions.
