Moshi is an excellent destination to visit when travelling in Tanzania. Being a popular destination in the country amongst tourists and travellers, Moshi offers plenty of sights and sounds to captivate all types of travellers. It is a multicultural area and is also home to a large community of Muslims. Muslim travellers will not find it difficult to find access to facilities such as Halal restaurants and mosques. A wealth of accommodation options and shopping opportunities - particularly at the ever-popular local markets - will be available to travellers as well to offer a fantastic travel experience.

Moshi is located in the mountainous region of Northeast Tanzania, with its municipality being home to a population of nearly 200,000 inhabitants that comprise three main ethnic groups - the Chagga, Maasai and Pare. The Moshi municipality is also the smallest municipality of the country and is considered to be the cleanest region of Tanzania.

The history of Moshi dates back to 1893 when it was established by the Germans as a military camp. It later became a town in 1956 and is currently divided into 21 administrative wards which are further divided into 60 smaller hamlets.

There is plenty to do and see when travelling in Moshi. Some of the main sights of Moshi include the Commonwealth War Cemetery, the former German administration office and the city mosque - which is a prominent landmark located in the heart of the town. Travellers may also visit the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro - which are two of Tanzania's most prominent sites.

The Kilimanjaro International Airport is the closest airport to Moshi and is located about 40 kilometres away from the town centre. Located further away is the Arusha Airport which is located about 80 kilometres away from Moshi. Both airports are prominent airports in Tanzania and serve numerous airlines and passengers throughout the year.

Halal Restaurants

Muslim travellers will be able to find quite a few Halal restaurants in Moshi. A popular Halal spot in Moshi for some of the best bread, honey, doughnuts and desserts in the area is Abba Ali's Hot Bread Shop at Rindi Lane. This delightful coffee shop and patteserie also offers prayer facilities on request and is open daily from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Mosques

There are quite a few mosques in Moshi for Muslim travellers, including the main Moshi Mosque located in the heart of the town. The Moshi Mosque is a prominent landmark of the town and is a bright white building structure which is hard to miss when travelling in the city. Exploring the town will reveal more mosques that can be visited by Muslim travellers during prayer times.
