Description

Located on the Gulf of Aqaba, is the only coastal city of Jordan, Aqaba. The city is located in the southernmost part of Jordan and is best known for its seaside facilities and diving resort. The city also holds importance of a commercial and industrial centre and is the only seaport of the country.

The city has a few masjids, the most prominent being the Sharif Hussein Bin Ali Masjid. Finding halal restaurants in the city is not difficult; almost all the restaurants serve halal food. You can find both local as well as international cuisines being served in the restaurants.

The beaches and diving opportunities are the main attraction of the city. There are several diving sites off the coast where you can enjoy the underwater coral reefs. The beaches of Aqaba are clean and excellent to sit back and relax.

The Aqaba Heritage Museum is a unique museum displaying the culture and heritage of the city. The museum features a collection of historic images. The Aqaba Fort too is a beautiful place to visit and immerse in history. The fort was built in the 14th century by Qansawh el-Ghawri, a Mamluk Sultan. If you wish to explore the history of the area, visit Ayla, which is the old city. Ayla was established when Islam was introduced to the area.

The souk in the city is the best place for shopping. From vegetables to jewellery, you can find a wide variety of things to buy. The most beautiful souvenir that can be bought in the city includes the ostrich egg painting. The eggs are painted with needle pricks and completing one egg can take weeks. The other items that can be bought as souvenirs include hand-blown glass, sand jars and embroidered clothing. Aqaba is a good place for buying silver Bedouin jewellery and beads.

The city has an abundance of taxis and they are easily available. There are also minibuses that ply in the city, mainly from the residential areas to the downtown.
