Beruwala is a small beach resort located on the western end of Sri Lanka. It is often said that Beruwala is the beginning of the 130 Km beach stretch developed as the southern coast beach resorts. The main attraction of Beruwala is the Beruwala Beach which is best for swimming and bathing. Visitors can sit back and relax at the beach and watch the fishermen getting fresh catch. A stroll through the local markets allows visitors to see fishermen selling their catch fresh from the sea.
The center of the Beruwala Town is bustling with lots of activity. However the beach area is secluded and quiet in comparison to the town center. The beach area is also good for a mid-day stroll as there is cool breeze all around the day and the beach is shaded. Around 30 minutes away from Beruwala is a beautiful mansion with an exquisitely designed garden. The mansion is known as The Brief and is wonderful to visit. Travellers can also enjoy a romantic ride along the river.
Beruwala is good for shopping for traditional items. There are quite a number of souvenir and gift shops around Beruwala. The surrounding area of Bentota has some supermarkets and shops where visitors can find some good items.
The nearest airport to Beruwala is the Bandaranaike International Airport. The airport is located about 80 Km from the Beruwalacenter. From the airport visitors can reach Colombo Fort in 1 hour and from Colombo Fort regular buses are available every 30 minutes to Beruwala. The bus ride from Colombo to Beruwala takes about 1.5-2 hours and costs around Rs 80. Taxis are also available from the airport but these can be expensive.
Finding halal food in Beruwala is easy. There are several halal restaurants in Beruwala and around the area. The Kandoori Restaurant on Galle Road is one of the best halal restaurants in area. Visitors can find several restaurants along the Bentota-Beruwala road serving halal food.
Beruwala has sizeable Muslim population. The Kechimalai Mosque is the main mosque in Beruwala and also is considered as the oldest mosque in Sri Lanka and is also known as the Masjid-ul-Abrar. Other mosques in the area include the BeruwalaAkkaragoda Mosque, BeruwalaPitawala Mosque, BeruwalaEgodawatta Mosque, etc.
